Kate Chopins The Awakening is a literary work full of symbolism. Sea, Birds, clothes, houses and death to other narrative elements are powerful symbols which add sum to the invention and to the characters. I will analyze the most applicable symbols presented in Chopins literary work. SEA The voice of the ocean is attractive; never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the head to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to bear itself in mazes of inward contemplation. The voice of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace. This seductive sea illustrates the depths of a persons soul, the eternal potential mystic away in every person. In addition to the sea, piss imagery in the form of rupture and mist are present in the scene, which emphasize Ednas feelings of unhappiness. Edna is unhappy because of her inadequate relationship with her husband, and inner turmoil. BIRDS A park and yellow parrot, which hung in a cage outside the door, unploughed repeating oer and over: In The Awakening, caged dolls serve as reminders of Ednas entrapment. She is caged in the roles as wife and mother; she is never pass judgment to think for herself. Moreover, the caged birds interpret the entrapment of the Victorian women in general.
Like the parrot, the womens movements are limited by the rules of society. In this first chapter, the parrot speaks in a phrase which nobody understood (pp3). The parrot is not able to broadcast its feelings just like Edna whose feelings are uncorrectable to understand, in comprehensible to the members of Creole soci! ety. In contrast to caged birds, Chopin uses wild birds and the desire of flight as symbols of freedom. This symbol is shown in a view of a bird experienced by Edna while mademoiselle Reisz is playing the piano.
